Ever see one of those little colorful free-standing pantries when you are out and about? If you have spotted them, they are pantries containing free items for anyone to give or receive, called either the Little Free Pantry or Little Free Library. Their motto is Take What You Need, Leave What You Can. What a great concept.
You can find these for food items and books. What better way to get rid of and share your old books with another or grab a best seller and a bookmark for zero dollars. Then, let go of some pantry items that are not being eaten that you don't want to go to waste.
The little free pantries are a movement to help fill the gap with food insecurity. They have been tested and are tried and true ways of dispersing food without the hassle for the utmost convenience. Also, they have been protected against vandalism and are being used properly the way they are intended to be. It seems the most popular locations for these are near youth centers or activity hubs, non-profits, and churches.
While the outsides are often colorfully decorated with closing hinged doors and happy images, the insides usually contain canned goods, pasta, and anything else that can be a help to another. I've seen grooming items in there and even a small painting once!
If you get a chance, stop by one to give or take if you need to. I can't think of a better way to share especially when you are on the run. Sometimes food donation places can have limited hours and restrictions on what they will take. But with this option, there is more freedom in more ways than one.
Do a Google or Bing search if you're interested in finding out more to see what it's all about and how you can help your community. You can read stories about the people who created these pantries and how they became inspired. You can even seek one out in your local area.
